Uber charged a Toronto man more than $18,000 for a 5-mile ride that should have cost about $10 Friday during surge pricing.
The man posted the receipt for his ride on Instagram for the amount of $18,518 in Canadian currency. That comes out to $14,412 in U.S. dollars.
The man’s friend said that Uber initially said they wouldn't give a refund. But after the friend posted the receipt on Twitter and it caught some interest from the media, Uber said that a mistake was made.
Uber released a statement that said, "There was an error here and it has been resolved. We have provided a full refund to this rider and apologized to him for this experience. We have safeguards in place to help prevent something like this from happening, and we are working to understand how this occurred."
