And then there was one. Soon, Oregon will have the last Blockbuster video store in the United States. https://t.co/pOibrpfeGs— The New York Times (@nytimes) July 15, 2018
In 2017, there were 10 Blockbuster Videos left in the U.S. But as of Sunday, there is now only one.
CNN reports that two Blockbusters—in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska—have closed down, making the store in Bend, Oregon, the sole remaining one in the country. In addition to DVD rentals of the newest releases, the store has floppy disks and uses old computer systems.
As recently as last year, there were 10 Blockbusters left throughout the country, with most of them located in Alaska. Blockbusters in Wasilla, the North Pole, and Soldotna closed for good earlier this year.
In May, Last Week Tonight host John Oliver tried to help save one of the two stores in Anchorage by sending them movie memorabilia from Russell Crowe's so-called "divorce" auction, including the leather jockstrap he wore in the 2005 film Cinderella Man.
The Blockbuster in Oregon credits a steady stream of regulars and curious tourists with helping it remain afloat.
