Nickelodeon announced on Tuesday plans for a SpongeBob SquarePants prequel series.Variety reports that the CG-animated series is titled Kamp Koral and will follow 10-year-old SpongeBob during his summer at sleep-away camp with his friends.
“SpongeBob has an incredible universe to expand upon and the greenlight for Kamp Koral is a testament to the strength and longevity of these characters known and loved by generations of fans around the world,” says Ramsey Naito, EVP of animation production and development at Nickelodeon.
The original SpongeBob series has been a staple of Nickelodeon since 1999, and was created by Stephen Hillenburg, who died of ALS in November 2018.
The 13-episode prequel series is slated to begin production in June.
