Crucial Update On Potential Debate Between Trump, Harris

Former President Donald Trump's campaign said it wouldn't commit to any future debates with Vice President Kamala Harris until the Democratic Party formally chooses a nominee, CNN reports.

Steven Cheung, the communications director for the Trump campaign, issued a statement late Thursday (July 25) night claiming it "would be inappropriate to schedule things with Harris because Democrats very well could still change their minds." The response came after Harris, the party's only presumptive nominee, accused Trump of "backpedaling" on a debate.

"What happened to 'any time, any place'?" a post on Harris' X account stated in response to MSNBC reporter Sam Stein quoting the Trump camp's update that the former president was "backing out of the debates."

Harris has already crossed the threshold of the 1,976 pledged delegates needed to win the nomination on the first ballot and raised $49.6 million in grassroots donations within one day of officially announcing her presidential campaign, CNN reports. The vice president currently has no credible challenger for the Democratic nomination and the endorsement of several top officials within the party including President Biden, who said he wanted to "offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year" in a post shared on his social media accounts after his decision to end his 2024 re-election campaign.

“I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris said in a statement obtained by Variety. “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party—and unite our nation—to defeat Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda. We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.”
