Move over, Ed Sheehan: Sam Smith’s back to reclaim the title of most sensitive British balladeer with his new single, “Too Good at Goodbyes,” which he dropped late Thursday night.
The tune is silky smooth and soulful, with a chorus of backup singers joining the Simply Red soundalike on the chorus.
As Entertainment Weekly notes, this is Smith’s first new song since he released the Oscar-winning “Writing’s on the Wall” from the James Bond movie Spectre in 2015, mistakenly claiming he was the first openly gay person to score a gold statue.
