The first trailer for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again dropped on YouTube Thursday, and by the looks of it, Meryl Streep's lead character is...dead?!
The two-and-half-minute preview features few shots of the 68-year-old Oscar winner. Even more tellingly, her friend Rosie (played by Julie Walters) talks about her in the past tense when she tells her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), "Your mother was the bravest person we ever met."
People notes that the sequel is expected to "switch between the past and the present," meaning Streep would play her character Donna in flashbacks.
Meanwhile, British actress Lily James, known for Baby Driver and Downton Abbey, plays a young Donna in other flashbacks. But wait, there's more: Cher makes a cameo at the end of the trailer as...Meryl Streep's mother?!
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again arrives in theaters in summer 2018.
