Shawn Mendes opens up about dealing with the constant rumors he's gay in the December cover story for Rolling Stone.
"I'd like to say that I don't care about it, but that's not true," the 20-year-old "Lost in Japan" singer says.
"This massive, massive thing for the last five years about me being gay. In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to be seen with someone--like a girl--to prove to people that I'm not gay. Even though in my heart I know that it's not a bad thing...And I hate that side of me."
After the article came out, Mendes tweeted on Monday, "Of course I have my insecurities and struggles but that's just one part of me. Sometimes the positive side of the story doesn't get fully told and I wish it had here."
The singer also talks about his rumored relationship with Hailey Baldwin and admits they were more than just friends at one point.
"I don't even wanna put a title on it," he explains. "I think it was more of a zone of limbo."
Mendes adds that he texted Baldwin congratulations on her marriage to Justin Bieber and calls her "one of the most beautiful hearts I've ever met."
