Will Smith revealed in an emotional Instagram video on Tuesday that he and his oldest son Trey had a tough time getting along for years after Smith's 1995 divorce from Trey's mom, Sheree Zampino.
"Trey and I been hanging and usually I take my kids separately on stuff just so they have their individual daddy time,” the 50-year-old Smith says in the clip, seemingly shot from his hotel room in Abu Dhabi, where he and 26-year-old Trey traveled to watch an F1 event.
"And he just hit me with, ‘You know what, Dad? I just realized you’re not just my dad.’ He paused and he said, ‘I’m pretty sure you’re my best friend.'"
Smith then appeared to hold back tears as he added, "Whoo. Yeah, man. Probably. Probably.”
In the caption, Smith also told followers, "It has not always been like this between Trey and I. We STRUGGLED FOR YEARS after my divorce from his mother," Smith wrote alongside the video.
"He felt betrayed and abandoned. It is a wild blessing to recover and restore a loving relationship with my beautiful son!"
