Oscar winner Ben Affleck tellsThe New York Times that divorcing Jennifer Garner is "the biggest regret of my life."
He explains, "I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems. The biggest regret of my life is this divorce."
The pair have stayed close and co-parent their three children, even after Affleck's three stints in rehab and a relapse in October.
While filming a scene for the upcoming film The Way Back where his character apologizes for failing his ex-wife, Affleck had a "total breakdown", according to the film's director.
"It was like a floodgate opened up," Gavin O'Connor said. "It was startling and powerful. I think that was a very personal moment in the movie. I think that was him."
As for Garner, she has said, "He's the love of my life. What am I going to say about that?"
The Way Back will be in theaters on March 6.
